Summer on Cornwall's beaches just got better

Summer on Cornwall's beaches just got better

Cornwall is a fantastic place to be a dog owner, with such a wide variety of stunning locations to walk your dog, you don't need an excuse to get out for some fresh air!

Cornwall’s beautiful beaches are a heaven for dog walkers, with miles and miles of golden sand to enjoy, however in the busy summer months many of these beaches have dog bans in place, preventing people from enjoying their favourite beaches with their pets.

This year, Cornish Council have made changes to these bans, following from the largest ever response to a consultation run by Cornwall Council, with over 13,000 people voicing their opinions about the dog bans.

Prior to these new changes, the dog bans varied from beach to beach, with some beaches allowing dogs outside of certain times or dates, some beaches allowing dogs in specific areas, and some beaches having outright bans meaning dogs couldn't be on the beach at all. This resulted in lots of confusion over what beaches were actually dog friendly, which isn't helpful when you can receive a fine for walking your dog on a beach during the ban!

The new changes have simplified these rules, banning dogs from the affected beaches from the same uniform time and date, that being between July 1st to August 31st between 10am and 6pm.

This is a huge improvement for dog walkers, as previously the bans stretched from April to September! Plus, dogs can still be walked on the affected beaches in the mornings and evenings before the dog bans come into effect.

Dogs are now banned from the following beaches between 10am and 6pm from July 1 to August 31.

Blue Flag beaches -

Blue flag is an organisation that operates globally to highlight the best coastal locations. ‘Blue flag’ titles are awarded to beaches that meet the standards of environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria the organisation look for. Cornwall is home to 6 beaches that have been awarded the Blue Flag.

Due to the standards of these beaches needing to be maintained to keep their Blue flag status, the dog bans will be in place at these beaches for a longer duration of time, that being from May 15th to 30th September. You can however still enjoy these beaches with your four-legged friend outside of the 10am-6pm time restriction.

Dogs are now banned from the following Blue Flag beaches between 10am and 6pm from May 15th to September 30th.

Porthtowan Beach, Porthtowan.

Porthmeor Beach, St Ives.

Widemouth Bay Beach, Bude.

Gyllyngvase Beach, Falmouth.

Trevone Beach, near Padstow.

*Great Western Beach in Newquay is a blue flag beach that welcomes dogs all year round, however there is a designated zone for them, so be sure to stick to this zone.
