Happiness with your Hound; International Happiness Day
Over the past year, many of us could argue that we definitely wouldn’t have had a smile on our faces if it wasn’t for our four-legged friends. From greeting us after a long day to forcing us to venture into the great outdoors for a walk in the wilderness, our pets really have been one of the major reasons we have smiled through the past 12 months.
With March 20th celebrating the International Day of Happiness, we have a list of all the things you and your pet can do to put a smile on both of your faces. Staying pawsitive can be a tricky task, even at the best of times, but as the country still remains in a national lockdown, people are facing mental health issues more than ever. With our minds being just as important as our bodies, spending some quality time with your canine companion really can boost your brain and put a grin on your chin. From playing with a new toy to a day at the beach, here’s how you and your pooch can celebrate just how happy you make each other each and every day and why our dogs are vital for maintaining our mental health.
How Pets Can Boost Our Mental Health
From snuggles to playtime, any moment with our pooches can have a significant impact on our thoughts and feelings. Quality time with your dog can boost chemicals in your brain responsible for happiness and love. As hugging and snuggling your pooch can release endorphins such as serotonin, small amounts of physical contact can help to reduce the onset of anxiety, stress and even depression.
As our best friends, our pets are responsible for reducing loneliness in us all. With a recent rise in pet purchases and adoptions, more and more of us are realising just how important a furry friend can be. Requiring daily nurturing and physical exercise, having a dog forces us into the great outdoors for walks and play, giving us that much needed outdoor time, especially in the recent climate, aiding both our mental and physical health.
So with spring almost in full bloom and the weather warming, here’s all the fun things you can do with your dog to put a smile on both of your faces.
Share an Ice-Cream
There really is nothing better on a warm spring day than an ice cream. For dogs check out the range of dog friendly ice creams available or make your very own (there are lots of simple recipes easily found with a quick google search). Make sure not to feed your dog human ice cream as the sugar and dairy content can be troublesome on their sensitive tummies. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face as you watch your furry friend wrap their tremendous tongues around their dog friendly ice-cream, this is one outdoor activity you won’t want to miss out on.
For us, here on our Cornish coastline there is offered some of the most delicious ice-cream on the planet. Made with gorgeous cornish clotted cream and flavoured to pawfection, there really is no better time to grab a 99 and a flake than in the season of spring. We recommend getting a Cornish classic at Roskilly’s farm, located in Helston, where you and your canine companion can explore the gorgeous surrounding scenery too.
Head to the Beach
Home to some of the most magnificent coastlines in the country, finding a blissful beach here in Cornwall is simple beyond belief. Surrounded by beautiful blue waters and sandy shores, you and your dog really can imagine you've travelled far beyond our Cornish shoreline. With dog beach bans not in place until April and June, March is a pawfect time to spend some quality time at the beach with your four-legged friend.
Whether it’s swimming in the water, paddleboarding around the coves or even just playing fetch, a little sand between the toes really can take away your lockdown blues and make you feel happy again. Offering picturesque views and a cafe with insta famous Hot Chocolates, head to Poldu Beach in Mullion and have a pawtastic day out with your four-legged friend.
There is nothing that makes us happier than spending some quality time with our dogs. From playing fetch to teaching them new tricks, there’s never been a better time to give your dogs some TLC.
