National Cat Health Month - The Pets Larder Natural Pet Shop

National Cat Health Month

Over the Atlantic, in the USA, February is designated as National Cat Health Month and here at The Pets Larder, we think it's the perfect excuse to highlight some of the things you can do to make sure your cat is as healthy as can be, as well as introducing you to some of the fantastic products we have on our shelves for our ever deserving feline friends.

National Cat Health Month is a time when cat owners across the pond are encouraged to think about the overall health of their marvellous mogs. There are so many ways of making sure your cats are in tip-top condition this month, as well as a whole host of fantastic food and treats to ensure they stay that way for many years to come.

We all love our cats and February is the perfect time to show that love in heaps, and with our top tips, you'll be safe in the knowledge that your cats will be healthy and fabulously fighting fit for another year.

Vets Checkups for your Cats

Most vets will recommend regular checkups for all of your animals, to make sure they are as fit and healthy as can be and so you can spot any potentially serious problems early on and treat them accordingly. This is especially important in cats as they are very independent animals and are less likely to make a scene when they have a problem, unlike our canine companions!

An annual visit to the vets is also a great way to make sure your animals are up to date with any necessary vaccinations, which can protect them from picking up any other serious diseases when out and about on their nightly prowls.

Furthermore, a check-up of their teeth during this visit will be an essential part of their medical, as dental problems in cats can cause serious issues with feeding, as well as causing infections and more serious illnesses if not treated in a timely manner.

If you've been lucky enough to welcome a new cat to your household over the Christmas period, now may also be the perfect time to think about spaying or neutering. These treatments are necessary for most cat owners to prevent unwanted behaviours (such as aggression, unwanted scent marking and going missing for long periods of time), reproductive illness and disease, and will also help to control the population of unwanted cats living in animal shelters and in other inadequate living conditions.

How to Spot Potential Problems in Your Cats

The most effective way of knowing if your cat is under the weather is to have a really solid idea of what their normal behaviours and routines are. This will enable you to notice when this changes significantly, giving you a strong indicator that there may be something wrong. Changes such as; mood swings, unusual lethargy (could be hard to spot if your cats are anything like my parent's mogs!), increased or decreased vocalisations, pupil dilation, breathing differently, significant weight gain or loss and noticeable changes in appetite, can all be signs of underlying illnesses.

The litter box is also a key place to look for signs of illness (sorry!), as any major changes in toileting habits or consistency, colour and smell of faeces, can be strong indicators of something being not quite right.

If your cat is displaying any unusual behaviours it is of paramount importance that you contact your vet right away and get them checked out. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Nutritious Treats and High-Quality Diets

We think the best course of action to ensure your cats are healthy, is prevention rather than cure and one of the easiest ways to do this is to make sure what they eat is of the highest possible quality.

The easiest way to boost your cat’s nutritional intake is by changing the treats that they consume to a variety that is made with your cats’ best interests at heart, such as the marvellous Mini-Treats from Natures Menu. These tremendous treats are the perfect addition to your cats' diet as they are made with 95% real meat and contain absolutely no meat derivatives or meat meals. As cats garner nearly all their nutrition from meat and fish, it is essential for a truly healthy mog to consume the best quality meat you can give them and Natures Menu - Mini-Treats contain exactly that.
