National Essay Day Competition

National Essay Day Competition

The 28th February sees the celebration of National Essay Day - created to encourage essay writing at least one day a year to challenge the view that essays are purely monotonous!

This year we are celebrating National Essay Day by launching a writing competition for children aged 8 to 11. Send us an essay about your pets and why they are special to you; maybe they've helped you through this particularly difficult year, or they have an unusual talent. Whatever it is, we want to hear from you!

What is National Essay Day?

The 28th of February is the birthdate of Michel de Montaigne, the author of the first writings named “essays”.

National Essay Day inspires students to excel in essay writing and never be afraid to try and stay true to the very word “essay”, which means “to try” or “to attempt”.

Started by One Freelance Limited, this day was created with hopes to resurrect the nature of essay writing and to inspire students to start writing what they really think, not what they are expected to think.

How are we taking part?

Here at Natural Cornish Pet shop, we want to spread awareness of this cause and encourage children to write about what they are passionate about, and in many cases for children, this is their pets!

After a particularly difficult year, the majority of which has been spent in lockdown, we have found our animals to be a great solace in these trying times. From entertainment to exercise, our four-legged friends have been with us through it all!

While schools remain closed, we thought that this essay competition could be a fun way to engage children in the joys of writing.
