Problems With Peanut Butter

As a treat loved by canines around the globe, Peanut Butter has become a popular choice amongst dog owners as a reward for great behaviour.

With companies now using Peanut Butter as a primary ingredient in treats and chews, our dogs really have gone nuts for this scrumptious spread!

However, care must be taken when feeding your four-legged friend this nutty treat. Some recipes of peanut butter contain ingredients that can cause significant harm to our furry friends, so caution must be taken when giving your hounds this indulgent treat!

Here at the Natural Cornish Pet Shop, we know how important keeping our four-legged friends fit and healthy is. As experts in the natural food business, we known exactly what your dogs should be eating, and with our very own, safer than safe, natural peanut butter, we are here to help you to keep safe when feeding your dog a piece of peanut pawfection!

Whilst we stand behind the benefits of this tasty treat, making sure you are feeding your furry friend the right Peanut Butter is hugely important. We recommended unsalted, natural peanut butter brands to ensure they contain no harmful ingredients such as Xylitol. Even a small amount of thrdr sinister sweeteners can have detrimental effects on our dog’s health. Causing an array of nasty side-effects, here’s why you should keep away from Xylitol and why are keeping your canines safe with our tasty Xylitol-free treats.

Why is it so toxic?

For both humans and dogs, the level of blood sugar is controlled by the release of insulin from our pancreas. Xylitol doesn’t stimulate the release of insulin from the pancreas in humans. However, when dogs eat something containing xylitol, the xylitol is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream which results in an extremely potent release of insulin from the pancreas.

This rapid release of insulin causes a profound decrease in the level of blood sugar (hypoglycemia), an effect that occurs within 10-60 minutes of eating the xylitol. Untreated, this hypoglycemia is life-threatening.

Signs of Xylitol poisoning can be:

Symptoms of xylitol poisoning develop rapidly, usually within 10-60 minutes of consumption

  • Weakness
  • Vomiting
  • Lack of coordination or difficulty walking or standing
  • Depression or lethargy
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Coma

If choosing to feed your dog peanut butter, whether thats our own label or something from your supermarket, it is fundamental to read every single ingredient in the label. Xylitol is a sweetener, sometimes replacing aspartame or sucralose. When buying peanut butter treats, ensure that the peanut butter used in the treats in completely Xylitol-free (even the smallest amount can have nasty effects).
