We recommended unsalted, natural peanut butter brands to ensure they contain no harmful ingredients such as Xylitol. Even a small amount of thrdr sinister sweeteners can have detrimental effects on our dog’s health. Causing an array of nasty side-effects, here’s why you should keep away from Xylitol and why are keeping your canines safe with our tasty Xylitol-free treats.
Why is it so toxic?
For both humans and dogs, the level of blood sugar is controlled by the release of insulin from our pancreas. Xylitol doesn’t stimulate the release of insulin from the pancreas in humans. However, when dogs eat something containing xylitol, the xylitol is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream which results in an extremely potent release of insulin from the pancreas.
This rapid release of insulin causes a profound decrease in the level of blood sugar (hypoglycemia), an effect that occurs within 10-60 minutes of eating the xylitol. Untreated, this hypoglycemia is life-threatening.
Signs of Xylitol poisoning can be:
Symptoms of xylitol poisoning develop rapidly, usually within 10-60 minutes of consumption
- Lack of coordination or difficulty walking or standing
- Depression or lethargy
If choosing to feed your dog peanut butter, whether thats our own label or something from your supermarket, it is fundamental to read every single ingredient in the label. Xylitol is a sweetener, sometimes replacing aspartame or sucralose. When buying peanut butter treats, ensure that the peanut butter used in the treats in completely Xylitol-free (even the smallest amount can have nasty effects).
