Tips for Owning a Spaniel

Tips for Owning a Spaniel

As one of the most popular breeds of choice on our Cornish coastline, whether it is a springer, cocker or sprocker, it would can be hard not to spot a spaniel on our shores. Originally bred for use on farms or for hunting, spaniels have become one of the most popular breeds in the UK. With their soft-centred nature and heightened senses, their multitude of talents has taken the country by storm and it would be hard to find any spaniel owner who isn’t head over heels in love with their pooch.

Energetic and eccentric beyond belief, owning a spaniel can, however, be a tricky task if you have owned less energetic breeds before. Requiring heaps of exercise and stimulation, keeping your spaniel active and occupied can be a fun but exhausting task. With years of doggy day care experience with these fantastic breeds of dog, here’s our tips and tricks to owning a spaniel and how to care for them in every stage of their life and development.

Keep them Active

Full of energy, spaniels require a whole heap of exercise on a daily basis, whether it be a beach walk or a glorious game of fetch, your spaniel will enjoy any time outdoors. Often extremely likely to pull when on leads and harnesses, we always recommend a sturdy and robust harness when taking your spaniel out and about. Our range of Hurrta Harnesses are fantastic in reducing pulling from your pooch and will distribute any force throughout their core keeping their body strong and healthy.

Care for Ears

With wonderfully curly fur surrounding their long ears, grooming for spaniels can be a tricky task when it comes to this area. Often becoming matted and tangled due to their furs thick and curly nature, irritations to their ears can lead to uncontrollable scratching and itching.

From a young age, we encourage you to get your spaniel accustomed to your playing and grooming their ears, rewarding them when you have been close to the area. This can prevent anxiety and stress in later years when grooming their ears, which is a necessary task. Conditioning your spaniel’s ears during bath time can help prevent matting and knotting and regular brushing of their fur is also essential to prevent this annoying irritation.

If you do find your spaniel’s ear fur is matted, then calmly separating the hairs can avoid the itching. Matted fur will often become dry and just pull away from your dogs ears without being painful or sore so don’t be afraid to be a little tough - the end result will be a lot more positive for your pooch.

Protect those Paws & Nose

No matter what the weather, it is fundamental to take care of your pets paws and noses. As one of the most sensitive parts of their bodies, protecting paws is essential when temperatures rise or plummet and grounds become uncomfortable for their pads. Investing in a protective nose and paw balm can help prevent blistering and soreness when your dog is out and about on freezing cold, or hot, pavements and roads.

For spaniels, their noses are a fundamental tool in their exploration of  the outdoors. Often used as working dogs for their incredible sense of smell, their noses are incredibly sensitive to changes in temperature and weather. With hard colds working their way across the country, their noses and paws can become chapped and sore leading to painful irritation.
