The Top Ten Cat Breeds in the UK

A while back, here at Natural Cornish Pet, we did a little research into what the most popular dog breeds in the UK might be and you can find our article here>

However, when we decided, as a group of feline fanciers as well as dog lovers, that we should do the same for cats the information we found wasn’t particularly conclusive. Although cats have long been cherished companions and still are, with 26% of all UK households having a feline friend, captivating owners with their elegance, charm, and unique personalities, there isn't a huge amount of evidence to show what the most popular breeds in the UK are. 

What we do know is that most cat owners have moggies (non-pedigree cats of mixed or unknown ancestry) with 63% of cat-owning households stating this and only 32% owning pure breeds or crossbreeds, a much lower figure when compared to the same research in dogs. 

So, although we didn't find any solid evidence as to which pure breed cats are most popular in the UK we collated a list of the top ten most popular cat breeds according to the rate at which we found them in internet searches alongside a little anecdotal evidence.

• 1. British Shorthair: The British Shorthair seems to reign supreme as one of the most popular pure cat breeds in the UK. With their round faces, dense coats, and sweet nature, these cats are adored for their calm and friendly demeanour making great companions for individuals and families alike.

• 2. Ragdoll: Known for their relaxed and floppy nature, Ragdolls have captured the hearts of many cat enthusiasts. These large, affectionate cats are characterised by their soft, semi-longhair coats and striking blue eyes. Ragdolls are known to go limp when held, earning them their name.

• 3. Siamese: Siamese cats are renowned for their striking blue almond-shaped eyes, short coats, and sleek bodies. Highly intelligent and communicative, they are known to be vocal and very demanding of attention. Siamese cats make loyal and sociable companions.

• 4. Maine Coon: As one of the largest domestic cat breeds, Maine Coons are impossible to overlook. Their majestic appearance, tufted ears, and bushy tails add to their charm. Maine Coons are friendly, gentle giants known for their intelligence and playful nature.

• 5. Bengal: Bengal cats exude a wild and exotic allure, with their striking coat pattern reminiscent of their leopard ancestors. Known for their energy and athleticism, Bengals are highly active and require plenty of mental and physical stimulation.

• 6. Persian: Persian cats are admired for their long, luxurious coats, expressive eyes, and serene expressions. These gentle and affectionate felines prefer a relaxed lifestyle and enjoy the comforts of home. Regular grooming is essential to maintain their stunning coats.

• 7. Sphynx: Despite their lack of fur, Sphynx cats are far from lacking in personality. Their hairless bodies, wrinkled skin, and large ears make them a distinctive breed. Sphynx cats are renowned for their extroverted and playful nature, often seeking warmth and attention.

• 8. Scottish Fold: Scottish Folds have captured the hearts of many with their unique folded ears, which give them an adorable and distinctive appearance. They are known for their friendly and inquisitive nature, making them wonderful companions for households with children and other pets.

• 9. Burmese: Burmese cats are characterised by their expressive golden eyes, short silky coats, and muscular bodies. Known for their affectionate and social nature, Burmese cats thrive on human interaction and make devoted companions.

• 10. Abyssinian: Abyssinians charm with their ticked (where individual hairs are banded with different colours) coats, lithe bodies, and playful personalities. Highly active and curious, Abyssinians enjoy exploring their surroundings and engaging in interactive play. They form strong bonds with their owners and thrive in stimulating environments.

What a great list! Just looking at the pictures whilst writing this article makes me want to adopt about a million more cats, although I'm not sure how Pushkin will feel about that, he’s not much of a sharer!  Don’t forget, that even though many of the purebred cats on this list are absolutely adorable there are hundreds of cats that need a home in rescue centres across the country and if you have space for a cat in your life then that really should be the first place you look.
