Living your life in an eco-friendly way, as dog owners, can often be tricky, given their meat-heavy diets, plastic-containing toys and seemingly harmful faecal waste. There are, however, a whole host of new products on the market as well as new information around composting that can help us dog owners be as eco-conscious as possible.
In today’s post, we will be looking at eco-friendly ways of getting rid of one’s dog waste and highlighting a few of our eco-friendly dog products, so we can all do our bit to help keep our carbon paw-prints low and our environment as healthy as can be.
As most of us will be aware, dog faeces can be potentially very harmful to the environment, especially when it is disposed of in the incorrect way. There are, however, a few simple things we can do to ensure that our dog poops are got rid of in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.
Dog faeces is organic waste and as such is fully compostable in the correct conditions. We will be writing a full article on the exact process of composting your dog-poo in the next few weeks so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that one.
The basic principle behind composting faeces, however, is to match the levels of nitrogen in the dog poo with an appropriate amount of carbon, wood chip or sawdust are both good examples of carbon-heavy composting materials. With a two-to-one ratio of wood to poo, mixed in with other composting materials such as grass clippings and unwanted weeds, you should have a rich source of plant food after about a year. We would recommend only using this type of compost on ornamental plants rather than ones you intend to eat, just in case of any leftover pathogens.
