A Few Of Our Favourite Eco-Friendly Dog Products
At Natural Cornish Pet, we think that looking after the environment is just as important as looking after our perfect pets, after all, if our environment fails there'll be nothing left, for us or our furry friends, to enjoy!
Living your life in an eco-friendly way, as dog owners, can often be tricky, given their meat-heavy diets, plastic-containing toys and seemingly harmful faecal waste. There are, however, a whole host of new products on the market as well as new information around composting that can help us dog owners be as eco-conscious as possible.
In today’s post, we will be looking at eco-friendly ways of getting rid of one’s dog waste and highlighting a few of our eco-friendly dog products, so we can all do our bit to help keep our carbon paw-prints low and our environment as healthy as can be.
Eco-Friendly Dog Waste Removal
As most of us will be aware, dog faeces can be potentially very harmful to the environment, especially when it is disposed of in the incorrect way. There are, however, a few simple things we can do to ensure that our dog poops are got rid of in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.
Composting Dog Poo
Dog faeces is organic waste and as such is fully compostable in the correct conditions. We will be writing a full article on the exact process of composting your dog-poo in the next few weeks so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that one.
The basic principle behind composting faeces, however, is to match the levels of nitrogen in the dog poo with an appropriate amount of carbon, wood chip or sawdust are both good examples of carbon-heavy composting materials. With a two-to-one ratio of wood to poo, mixed in with other composting materials such as grass clippings and unwanted weeds, you should have a rich source of plant food after about a year. We would recommend only using this type of compost on ornamental plants rather than ones you intend to eat, just in case of any leftover pathogens.
When composting dog poo you will also need a fully compostable dog poo bag such as Earth Rated’s Compostable Poop Bags. These brilliant bags are made from a mixture of biodegradable PBAT and vegetable starches and meet all of the standards set for full compostability. 100% leakproof and scent-free, Earth Rated’s Compostable Poop Bags are perfect for the discerning dog owner who plans on composting their unwanted waste.
These bags can also be taken to certain recycling centres and municipal composting facilities to be disposed of in an eco-friendly way for you.
Eco-Friendly Dog Treats
At Natural Cornish Pet, we love a dog treat with a heart and there are so many options on our shelves for those who want to do better, for the environment, when buying their precious pooches the treats they deserve. Not only do we have a massive selection of plant-based dog treats and vegetarian dog treats produced by ourselves, but we also stock a fabulous selection of superb tidbits from the best suppliers, of eco-friendly and socially responsible dog products, in the country.
Take the fantastic Lily’s Kitchen for example, which has been a certified B Corporation since 2015. B corporations are certified by B Lab, a nonprofit that is helping to measure companies' social and environmental impacts and certifying those that meet their high standards of performance, accountability and transparency.
Vegetarian Dog Treats
One of the easiest ways we can all make a difference to the state of the environment is to cut down on the amount of meat we consume. Meat accounts for over 60% of greenhouse gas emissions related to the production of food. A simple way to cut down on the amount of meat your dog eats is to opt for an eco-friendly dog product such as a vegetarian or vegan dog treat.
At Natural Cornish Pet, we have an absolutely huge selection of vegetarian dog chews and vegetarian dog treats, ranging from Soopa’s superb Coconut and Chia Seed Bites all the way to Green & Wilds Super Seaweed Snacks, our very own Vegetable Dental Sticks and everything in between.
We are certain there’ll be something in our selection of sustainable chews and treats that your dog will adore and you’ll be able to do your bit for the environment too while they chew.
When you’re thinking about the impact your dog has on the environment and what you can do about it, why not try a few of our cool composting tips or perhaps try one of our eco-friendly dog products such as a vegetarian dog chew or something delicious from a company with a strong moral compass. Whatever you decide to do we’d love to know how you’re doing it and which of our perfect products you did it with. Get in touch via our Facebook and Instagram.
